A wooden carpenter's 'horse' with a tail sprouting out of one end.

A lumped clay form with two thumb shaped holes, displayed on a plinth. This lumpen, baked clay figure was made after the artist visited the Picasso Museum, Paris in 1994. He identified a chronological moment when Picasso had recognized his own value as an artist and begun to produce a prolific amount of artworks that had a shorthand mark of the artist about them. The mark or the process as a signature. This is the confidence of an artist who is no longer struggling to communicate but is talking fluently in Picasso-ese. The rest of the world looks on and marvels uncomprehendingly. Knowing that he is in full flow and recognizing his star quality but the dialogue is no longer with an audience. The artist made this artwork as an experiment with this theory: could he make a piece of work that had the confidence of Picasso, the increasingly acknowledged master of twentieth-century art? With two fat thumb indentations could he express something profound? The working title &lsquo;After Picasso&rsquo; was renamed &lsquo;Formally Known As&hellip;&rsquo; to give some distance to the idea &ndash; not a homage but a study, a play on the word &lsquo;formal&rsquo;.

Having recognized white emulsion paint as the background canvas – the theatre backdrop of contemporary art – the Artist then put his mind to the tool that is used to apply the paint. The first piece was a wooden museum vitrine made in 1995 called ‘Paint, Two Rollers and a Brush’. This was a homage to the cultural significance or archeological importance of the gallery decorator and his tools. Displayed in the cabinet were several used objects straight out of the recently repainted gallery exactly as their title suggests. They are fresh and curious in their isolation. Looking at them through the imaginary eyes of an alien they appear angular and precise. Specialised tools for a specialized job. 
The most angular and specialized of all is the paint roller. A bent and twisted mark-making tool that covers a wall in white faster than you can blink. Cast in bronze – the traditional material of ‘Great Sculpture’ – the tool then becomes heavy and significant, instead of light and useful, allowing the viewer to study the detail of the everyday object: the tufts of the sheepskin roller, the ingeniously designed bent handle.
