24th January 2014 is an immediate reference to We Are One, another neon sculpture that was displayed on the façade of the Bowes Museum building that shows the number 7,201,966,413. It was inspired by Mario Merz’ 1960s neon light works and Merz’ fascination with the Fibonacci sequence – a 13th century mathematical formula evolved from ancient Sanskrit poetry, an algorithm that was devised as a logic game to calculate the prodigious breeding of rabbits. Frequently the series is found and reflected in nature. By definition the sequence grows where each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two. 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,etc.
