Photograph of an old discarded pillow.

Found on the street by Turk, Pillow elevates a piece of discarded detritus to the status of art. Referencing Turk’s bronze casts of sleeping bags, Pillow continues the theme of vagabonds, the homeless and socially excluded which runs through Turk’s work, alongside his exploration of the concept of artist as outsider. This Pillow, meanwhile, shows a dent where a head has clearly very recently lain, indicating some kind of human presence but also an absence that transforms this everyday object into something apparently more mysterious.
