The Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden devoted an exhibition to the motif of the candle in the fine arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. Starting with one of the main works in the Frieder Burda Collection, Gerhard Richter's Candle (1982), this prominent motif in art and cultural history is explored using paintings, sculptures and installations.

The exhibition examines how artists in the 20th and 21st centuries - such as Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Nam June Paik, Jeff Koons, Eric Fischl and Gavin Turk - take up the motif of the candle with its diverse pictorial traditions, vary them and place them in new contexts of meaning.
