Gavin Turk at Frieze London, Frieze Masters and Frieze Week Projects

Set to be a standout exhibition in London in 2027, Gavin Turk’s intervention at Sir John Soane’s Museum brings one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists into dialogue with one of London’s most extraordinary museums, uncovering new stories of collecting, value and memory.Renowned for transforming overlooked and discarded objects into meticulously crafted works of art, Turk, once described as ‘art’s king of trash’, uses hand-painted bronzes, paintings and trompe l’oeil sculptures to challenge how we assign value. His playful interventions, featuring found objects and recreations of everyday waste, inspire us to reconsider our own perspectives towards consumption.The exhibition finds a natural home at Sir John Soane’s Museum, where Turk enters into conversation with both the building, collection and its often-overlooked Building Archive. Spanning 1837 to the present, the Archive preserves traces of everyday Museum life - from a George III halfpenny found in dust in the Strong Closet in 2025, a quill perhaps dropped into a drawer by one of Soane’s students, and a set of buttons passed down from one Head Porter to another - providing evidence of the people who have lived, worked in and cared for the Museum.Responding directly to the building’s history, Turk will create new works, including teazels and a crow, which will be dotted around the Museum, camouflaged among the permanent collection. In The Foyle Space, a major sculptural installation titled Looking Glass takes the form of a dichroic glass cube. This is filled with detritus from Turk’s studio, a vision of waste, reframed as a relic, echoing the debris-filled time capsule left by Sir John Soane in his private bathtub which contained false teeth, receipts and broken glass.Upstairs in the Exhibition Galleries, a selection of objects from the Building Archive will be on display, co-curated by Turk and Deputy Director and Inspectress of Sir John Soane’s Museum, Helen Dorey, who has cared for the Museum for the past forty years. Together, the new and archival objects will transform the Museum into a living conversation between history and the present, inviting visitors to consider collecting as an act of storytelling and preservation.

Gavin Turk Exhibition Announced 2027

<h3>To mark the launch of Gavin Turk’s latest catalogue, join us for an evening of conversation that will bring together Gavin Turk, Darian Leader, and Roberta Cremoncini, both of whom have contributed to the publication.</h3>The panel discussion will explore the ideas and influences behind Turk’s recent Morandi series. The conversation will consider the psychoanalytic relationships between dirt, collecting and the object, alongside the art-historical legacy of Giorgio Morandi – his obsessive return to the still life, and his enduring reputation as the ‘artist’s artist’.Moving between psychoanalysis, art history and Turk’s own practice, the discussion will consider what it means to collect, arrange and repeatedly return to everyday objects, and how Turk’s work both pays homage to and disrupts Morandi’s distinctive visual language.About the book:&nbsp;Still Life, 2026 This new publication brings together fifty paintings from Gavin Turk’s recent series inspired by Giorgio Morandi, illustrated alongside installation view from their exhibitions. The catalogue features a text by Dairan Leader exploring the psychology of looking and stillness in Turk’s work, and accompanying text by Turk himself, and an interview with Roberta Cremoncini, reflecting on Morandi’s life and legacy.<h3>Following the conversation, guests will have the first opportunity to purchase the new catalogue (£30, the first 30 copies sold will be signed)</h3>Gavin Turk is a conceptual artist whose work interrogates ideas of authenticity, authorship, and the ‘myth’ of the artist. Drawing on Surrealist methodologies, his practice is self-reflexive and often knowingly parodic, questioning the art world’s value systems and the construction of the artist’s persona. Turk came to prominence with his postgraduate degree show at the Royal College of Art where he presented Cave (1991): an empty, whitewashed room bearing a blue heritage plaque inscribed with his own name. The installation announced a sceptical, postmodern view of artistic status and reputation, establishing the use of his name as a recurring device within his practice. It brought Turk immediate notoriety following the attention of Charles Saatchi and led to his association with the generation of Young British Artists (YBAs). Since then, Turk has developed a wide-ranging body of work that examines the cultural and economic frameworks surrounding art and its makers. He frequently reconfigures the visual languages of artists who precede him, using art history as material through which questions of originality, influence and inheritance are explored. Working across sculpture, painting, photography, and print, Turk has pioneered approaches now familiar within British contemporary art, including painted bronze, waxwork, art-historical appropriation, and the use of discarded materials.Darian Leader is a British psychoanalyst practising in London, a founding member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research (CFAR), and a member/and former President of The College of Psychoanalysts-UK. He writes widely for a general audience on psychoanalysis and mental life, with books including The New Black: Mourning, Melancholia and Depression, Strictly Bipolar, What Is Madness? and Why Can't We Sleep?, as well as on visual art and the psychology of looking, notably Stealing the Mona Lisa: What Art Stops Us from Seeing. His latest book, Autisms, published by Penguin, draws on his clinical experience and the testimonies of autistic people to explore the many faces of autism and how it has been understood and treated. Roberta Cremoncini is an art historian and curator, and Director of the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in London. She joined the Estorick Collection as Curator in 1997 and has been its Director since 2001, during which time she has curated numerous exhibitions and written texts and essays for catalogues, including Giorgio Morandi: The Collector's Eye. She has published widely, lectured at institutions such as the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, and is a regular contributor to Italian and British radio and television. In 2017 she was awarded the honour of Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana in recognition of her work promoting Italian art and culture in the UK.Doors open at 18.00, the talk will start at 18.30.Standard£15Estorick Collection Member£12Students£12Pay It Forward£20Open Door£5ADVANCED BOOKING REQUIRED &gt; CLICK <a href="https://tickets.estorickcollection.com/event-tickets/81896?catID=64824">HERE</a> TO BOOK. &nbsp;

Gavin Turk: Morandi Still Life - Catalogue Launch & Panel Discussion

The artist Gavin Turk explores how, for all its glossy associations with repetitive soup cans, Hollywood icons and US comic strips, the roots of Pop Art are to be found closer to home, in Britain.In 1956, British Pop Art found its voice at the This Is Tomorrow exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and the term Pop Art was used in print for the first time. Emerging from a Britain still recovering from the devastation of the Second World War and the austerity that followed, British artists looked both longingly and critically towards America’s burgeoning consumer culture, advertising and mass media.Artists including Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton and, later, David Hockney, Pauline Boty, Jann Haworth and Peter Blake borrowed from the visual landscape of post-war Americana, experimenting with collage, screen printing and ‘soft sculpture’ to challenge the boundaries between art and design, high and low culture, mass production and individuality.But Britain’s relationship with American consumerism was necessarily at one remove. The shiny new world of the so-called 'Golden Age of Capitalism' remained, for many Britons, a distant dream. British Pop Art therefore developed a distinctive character: celebratory and satirical, fascinated and sceptical, witty and critical. It reflected a society shaped by class distinctions and complicated attitudes towards capitalism, consumerism and the rapidly changing media landscape.The foundations laid by British Pop Art have had a profound influence on successive generations of artists and Turk explores his own relationship with Pop Art, particularly in his bronze cast of a black bin bag, painted to look completely real, which plays with the distinction between the everyday object and the precious work of art. This asks us to reconsider what we see, what we value, and what are prepared to call ‘art’.British society has changed radically since the 1950s, but the questions that preoccupied the original Pop artists remain strikingly familiar. Turk explores how Pop Art anticipated many of the phenomena that define the contemporary world: celebrity culture, advertising, popular and elite culture, and the increasingly unstable relationship between the original and the copy. In the age of AI, deepfakes and endless digital reproduction, the questions British Pop artist posed about identity, authenticity and the status of the image feel remarkably prophetic.In conversation with artists Jann Haworth, Michael Craig-Martin and Rachel Maclean, and art historians Flavia Frigeri at the National Portrait Gallery, Louisa Buck, Lisa Mullen and Simon Martin at Pallant House Gallery, Gavin Turk explores how British Pop artists responded to their changing world, and where Pop Art’s legacy can be found today.Presenter: Gavin Turk Producer: Melissa FitzGerald Additional research: Eliane Glaser Sound design: Tony Churnside Cover image: courtesy of the artist.A Zinc Audio production for BBC Radio 4
