This kissing stone is made of a used granite curb stone from Hackney, historically granite paving stones signified investment and longevity, the road was a permanent placing, whereas the newly formed concrete or cement replacements give it a transient quality.

The viewer is asked to interact with the stone by kissing it. Reversing the usual ‘do not touch the art’ barrier between the viewer and the artwork, you are now asked to bend down and kiss it. In turn become part of the performance, one corner of the kissing stone is smoothed through a process that appears to be centuries of kissing. By touching the stone there is a transfer of energy, the performer is imbued with the gift of creativity. Reminding us of the rubbing of Buddhas belly or St. Peter’s foot in the Vatican, also the Blarney Stone, which when kissed endows the kisser with the gift of the gab.

There is a saying, that if you are to fall over and hit your face, possibly when you’re drunk, or pushed, it could be said that you have kissed the curb.

At first sight this appears to be the form of a homeless sleeper. Wrapped in a sleeping bag cocoon, its title implies a wonderer living peripatetic life outside our cultural value systems. But the soft folds of the sleeping bag turn out to be hard metal, a painted bronze cast of this embarrassing cultural phenomenon. With uncompromising stillness the sculpture will never move or wander except at the behest of an art transport hoist. This image captured forever in the gallery, allows the viewer to wonder about lives led outside the ordinary; it gives them the power to stare.

Displayed in the cabinet were several used objects straight out of the recently repainted gallery exactly as their title suggests. They are fresh and curious in their isolation. Looking at them through the imaginary eyes of an alien they appear angular and precise. Specialised tools for a specialized job. The most angular and specialized of all is the paint roller. A bent and twisted mark-making tool that covers a wall in white faster than you can blink. Cast in bronze &ndash; the traditional material of &lsquo;Great Sculpture&rsquo; &ndash; the tool then becomes heavy and significant, instead of light and useful, allowing the viewer to study the detail of the everyday object: the tufts of the sheepskin roller, the ingeniously designed bent handle.
